Summary
When a family of sisters and their various male companions gather for the funeral of their mother, the least one might have hoped for is a solemn reunification, some words of condelence, or even just a little dignity.

Instead what unfolds is the comical, yet painful rediscovery of a mother few of them ever reall respected and whom none of them ever truly knew.

Skeletons come tumbling out of cupboards and fond delusions are demolished as each of the sisters' wholly imperfect lives is revealed. With the savage humour that only siblings can display to one another, it becomes apparent that the mother they thought they had left behind, still runs through them like wine through water.

A Masterpiece!
Director Lewis Gilbert (82, pictured right) shows in his 38th motion picture that he still is capable of providing great movies to the world of cinema.

Julie Walters (in her third Gilbert film) heads an all-star cast that includes John Hannah, Joanne Whalley, and Tom Wilkinson; all doing great, convincing jobs. It's newcomer André Schneider, though, that steals the movie.

Debbie Wiseman's score is haunting and provides this beautifully photographed film an air of melancholy.

"Before You Go" is based on Shelagh Stephenson's award-winning West End hit, "The Memory of Water"; already regarded as one of the most pensive, honest and somewhat painful black comedy in theatre history.

This film shows British cinema at its best. A masterpiece by a masterful director.
